Cycling to Celje's most visited tourist attraction is an excellent choice for those who love history and are active cyclists as well.
Useful information
The climb to the Celje Castle can be quite a strength sapper. You will need at least as much strength as Tadej Pogačar, currently the best cyclist in the world, who conquered the ascent, won the stage and the Tour of Slovenia (Dirka Po Sloveniji). You start your cycling journey at the Park&Ride car park and follow the cycle path past the Celje Railway Station, where a look to the left uncovers a picturesque view of Krekov trg with its iconic buildings, such as Celjski dom and Hotel Evropa. Continue on the cycle path to the Pošta Slovenije post office building and turn right toward the bridge over the Voglajna River. Information boards will help with directions. The ascent to the Celje Castle offers stunning views of the city with its green surroundings. Once at the top, take some time to admire and experience the largest medieval castle in Slovenia. Being careful on the descent from the castle, we recommend taking a circuitous route through the Skalna klet residential area, past a football pitch and on to the bridge over the Savinja River. From there, cross the bridge and return to the starting point.
