Under The Stars of Celje

Scroll

For more than half a millennium, Celje has been guided by three stars, the symbol of the Counts of Celje. Their story is akin to an epic film, full of clashes, boldness, and intrigues at the court. Experience Slovenia's largest mediaeval castle! But to really get a feel for the town of the princely Counts, you should feel its stars at night, high up in the sky. Once you combine it all with the culinary stars of Celje's restaurants, pubs and cafés, your holiday will be perfect.

They say the higher you go, the better the views. And the best views of the town on the Savinja river will be caught from high up in the air, just beneath the Celje sky. A scenic hot air balloon ride is a true adrenaline-soaked experience that you will not forget, and you will get to see Celje early in the morning as very few people know it.

Get your cameras ready and capture your memories of these views!

Hint: lunch at one of the restaurants of your choice

In the afternoon, we recommend visiting the Old Counts’ Mansion, Celje’s prettiest renaissance building. As you stand under the vaulted ceilings, you will feel like a Count or Countess of the Thurn-Valsassina dynasty, its former owners. The Mansion is home to four exhibitions that will take you from antiquity to the early 20th century, and it includes the breathtaking and mysterious painting of the Celje ceiling commissioned by the very Counts of Thurn-Valsassina at the turn from the renaissance to the baroque. Muzejski trg – the Museum Square – which is where the Old Count’s Mansion is located, is also an archaeological monument with a treasure trove of history buried beneath it. The motives and colours of the frescos preserved in situ at this very spot compare to those from Pompeii.

Most archaeological stars of Celje are also reflected in culinary stars. In Celje, we most often order a Celje roll, all crunchy and dipped in chocolate. We recommend ordering it along with a fragrant cup of coffee at the popular café in the centre of the town – the Zvezda pastry shop!

The Counts of Celje were aiming high – all the way to the stars. The largest mediaeval castle in Slovenia is like a fortress perched atop the hill, carefully watching all routes towards Celje’s centre from afar. The first foundations of Celje’s Old Castle date back to the second half of the 12th century. Memories of the past are kept alive by exciting legends, exhibitions, and interactive experiences. Explore on your own and discover corners no one else knows about! Experience the mightiest castle in Slovenia through the flavours of local specialities, freshly made for you at Gostinstvo Knez. We recommend the princely finger food. Lick-your-fingers good!

“I eat well, I eat like a Count of Celje!” That is our motto that guided us as we prepared a princely experience for you.

Join a guide and allow yourself to “get lost” in Celje. You will visit locations that are usually not to be found in guidebooks or marked on maps. Through the guide’s intriguing stories, you will learn about all that shaped today’s image of the town besides its official history. We will be honest with you – and share with you all sides of our town. A night on the town in Celje will round off your day in the town of Counts.
