🏡 Alma M. Karlin Memorial House – a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable woman

Tucked away in the green hills of Pečovnik stands a house that tells a story of courage, curiosity, and independence.
This was the home of Alma M. Karlin – a global traveller, writer, and explorer who, in the early 20th century, set off on a solo journey around the world and became one of Slovenia’s most extraordinary women.
Today, her house invites you into an experience that weaves together history, culture, and the inner strength of a woman ahead of her time.

🧭 About the House and Alma

Alma Maximiliana Karlin (1889–1950) is regarded as one of Slovenia’s most fearless travellers and literary figures of the 20th century.
She spoke more than ten languages, wrote in German, English, and Slovene, and between 1919 and 1928, she travelled the world on her own. Her journey was not only physical – it was deeply personal, reflecting a spiritual and cultural exploration of self and others.

After returning from her travels, she settled in Celje, in her peaceful home in Pečovnik. There, she continued writing, creating, and living in the spirit of freedom – despite the challenges and solitude of her later years.
Today, the house has been transformed into a memorial space, featuring the exhibition The Lonely Journey of Alma M. Karlin. Visitors are invited to step into her life through her personal items, writings, letters, and memories.

Visiting the house offers an intimate glimpse into Alma’s life and work – a story of independence, global perspective, and quiet spiritual depth that still inspires today.
