The centre of the old town of Celje hides the ancient, medieval and recent history.
Did you know how important and flourishing the old Roman settlement Celeia was? During the Middle Ages, three stars lit up, a symbol which to this day accompanies Celje and Slovenia on the city and national coat-of-arms. These are the stars of the Counts of Celje, the mightiest noble dynasty in Slovenia.
The old city centre of Celje is exactly as it appears from the Celje Castle. Lovely and picturesque, with intertwining streets and events along the Savinja River. With a trained guide, who knows the City of the Counts as well as his own pocket, it is even more exhilarating to learn about the historic periods that have left their mark on Celje. The tour begins in the Tourist Information Centre, which received the Europa Nostra award for the archaeological pavilion in the city centre for its innovative interpretation of the historic heritage. It is located on top of the former medieval armoury from the time of the Counts of Celje and the ancient villas from the period of the ancient Roman Celeia.
During the tour of the city, you can feel the today’s and past beat of one of the most interesting historic Slovenian cities.
