A town that proudly shows its ancient Roman and mediaeval face is much more than that. Museums and galleries power the cultural pulse of the "town of the princely counts". And if you are a museum buff, artistic hedonist, or merely someone who enjoys a good story, then you surely won't regret a visit to one of Celje's museums or galleries.
At the Centre for Contemporary Arts, you will hear, see, feel art – or indeed Art with a capital A. This is our space of diversity and integration that Celje is particularly proud of. Some exhibitions feature artists whose work is a major part of Slovenian contemporary art, while others bring together local and international creativity; yet all will create an impression of the artist as a bridge. A link between the visible and invisible. The one who will reveal what you normally do not see, and bring that into your world through music, painting, statue, building …
It would be amiss not to combine art with local cuisine. Our recommendation is a sweet choice, traditional, yet with a touch of modernity. Treat yourself to a kremšnita, a slice with homemade vanilla custard, whipped cream, sour cherry jelly, chocolate, and hazelnuts. If the taste reminds you of the famous version of this dessert you may have tasted in Bled, this is merely because the pastry chef brought her skills acquired at Celje’s renowned pastry shop Pri Kosti to Gorenjska. At Stari pisker, they further refined the taste. You will not regret it!
Many artists have left their mark on Celje. Plečnik’s heritage at the edge of the former mediaeval walls is only one of the buildings adorning the old city centre. There are statues celebrating remarkable creative people and their achievements at every step of the way. Anton Aškerc whose epic The Last Man of the Celje Dynasty recounts the tragic demise of the Count of Celje Ulrik II, the fearless globetrotter and writer Alma Karlin, Anton Martin Slomšek, photographer Josip Pelikan … These are only some of the many without whom Celje would have been a different town today. A guide will take you on a tour and tell the tales of Celje’s luminaries.

The program is available from Tuesday to Sunday during regular working hours of the Centre for Contemporary Arts (a tour is not possible on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays), including in the morning.
