Celje Carnival

Celje Carnival opens a colourful year of events in the City of the Counts by making its streets full of events and fun for all generations.

When the whip-crackers (i.e. a group of men using whips to hit the ground) sound their whips and the Kurenti, the famous Slovenian characters inscribed on the UNESCO list of intangible heritage, start chasing away winter and call spring by shaking their bells, things start to happen for real. The Celje Carnival is best known for its prize-winning group masks and the Shrove burial, which is organised by the Celeia Institute in cooperation with cultural associations.
